Santorum Santorum Says of the Day: Speaking with George Stephanopoulos on this morning’s This Week, presidential candidate Rick Santorum was asked to clarify a statement he made last October, concerning JFK’s famous separation of church and state speech to Baptist ministers.
“Earlier in my political career, I had the opportunity to read the speech, and I almost threw up,” Santorum told an audience at the College of Saint Mary Magdalen.
“Why did it make you throw up?” inquired Stephanopoulos. “I don’t believe in an America where the separation between church and state is absolute,” replied Santorum. “The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and visions of our country.”
Later, on Meet The Press, Santorum doubled down on his position, telling host David Gregory that the separation of church and state was “not the founders’ vision.”
Of course, the principle of church-state separation is one that has been long-held by American lawmakers, statesmen, and presidents — including GOP deity Ronald Reagan.
“We establish no religion in this country, we command no worship, we mandate no belief, nor will we ever,” Reagan said in a 1984 campaign speech. “Church and state are, and must remain, separate.”
This man cannot be real.
The fact that this man is even in the race at all says such dark things about our country, I cannot even begin to deal with it.
Bolding mine. I call his attention to the following:
- “No qualification of wealth, of birth, of religious faith, or of civil profession is permitted to fetter the judgement or disappoint the inclination of the people.” -James Madison (Federalist No. 57)
- “Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his god, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their ‘legislature’ should ‘make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,’ thus building a wall of separation between church and State.” -Thomas Jefferson
- “In a society in under the forms of which the stronger faction can readily unite and oppress the weaker, anarchy may truly be said to reign as in a state of nature, where the weaker individual is not secured against the violence of the stronger.” -James Madison (Federalist No. 52)
- “The civil Government, though bereft of everything like an associated hierarchy, possesses the requisite stability, and performs its functions with complete success, whilst the number, the industry, and the morality of the priesthood, and the devotion of the people, have been manifestly increased by the total separation of the church from the State.” - James Madison
In short, Rick, you should probably take a history class before mouthing off about what you think the founders may have meant, given that some of them actually used the EXACT FUCKING PHRASE “separation of church and state”.
Reblogged for the day/non-Oscar crowd. Everyone needs to see this comment that Santorum made re: the church-state relationship.
